BYS YOUNG FAMILIES TEAM

Our team provides innovative support and a positive approach to parenting, with young people aged 25 years and under.

We support young people and their children through,

  • onsite support
  • one on one home visits
  • parenting groups
  • community events and activities
  • Advocacy

The dominant aspects of the team practice framework are focusing on strengths and fostering attachment.

The BYS Young Families worker is located at Brisbane Youth Service and is able to be accessed through drop in providing frontline support to at-risk young families experiencing issues including,

  • homelessness,
  • substance use,
  • child protection issues,
  • legal issues and
  • mental health affecting the safety and well being of their family.

The BYS Young Families Worker is able to provide support to families for up to 2 years and this program can be very helpful for families requiring an ongoing, medium to low level support.

PARENTS YES Program

“Young, Equal and Supported”

As a part of the BYS Young Families Team, Parents YES staff work offsite from BYS and also provide innovative, strengths based support for young parents 25 years and under.

The Parents YES program focuses on,

·        young parent’s strengths

·        resiliency with a solutions based approach.

·        family focussed support

·        making positive and effective decisions and

·        motivation to enhance parenting

·        address identified child safety concerns

The Parents YES Program is more intensive than the BYS Family Worker with support up to several times per week however, this support is more time limited being only up to 9 months.  This program can be very beneficial at critical points in a young family’s journey.

Young Parents Group

Our Young Parents Group is unique in that both young mums and/or young dads are invited to attend.

Group is held each Tuesday from 10am to 1pm, 3 terms per year covering the topics of Communication, Nurturing and Attachment.

The Young Parents Group is an opportunity to not only socialise with other young parents but learn additional parenting skills.

Young Parents Group is a safe learning space providing young parents with educational information as well as quality time with their children.

Young Parents Group is also open to young families involved in the child protection system.

You Make the Difference®

You Make the Difference is a group that is run for 10 weeks, twice a year with a focus on parent-child interaction with young parents who have children under 7 years of age. This program was developed by the Hanen Centre in Toronto, Canada in order to enhance parent’s ability to use positive interaction through play.

You Make the Difference enhances child development, communication, attachment and bonding through structured play.

At the end of the ten weeks the aim of the program is that parents become naturally tuned-in parents and use the skills learnt as part of day to day life.
